Digital Communication for Conferences at Humboldt University of Berlin

For the Faculty of Cultural, Social and Educational Sciences at Humboldt University, we developed three cost-effective, user-friendly websites for conferences that provide a clear structure for announcements, registration and organization. Using a static page generator, we were able to efficiently implement the project and flexibly customize the platform while integrating the university's corporate design. In addition to simple navigation for organizers, speakers and participants, we designed a poster that strengthened the visual appearance of the main conference. Despite limited resources and a tight schedule, we managed to work closely together in an agile manner, achieve good results and receive satisfied feedback from the client. It was fun! 🎊

We developed three tailor-made conference websites for the Faculty of Cultural, Social and Educational Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, represented by Professor Dr. Marcello Caruso from the Institute of Educational Sciences. The aim of the project was to provide a professional and user-friendly platform for announcements, registration and organization - and to do so on a very limited budget. As a special extra, we also designed a poster to round off the visual appearance of the conferences.

Our path from idea to implementation

The commission came to us through an earlier collaboration: we had already developed a database interface for Humboldt University to make it easier to maintain research data. In this project, we were asked to design conference websites tailored to different target groups, including organizers, speakers and participants. Together, we developed a simple but appealing website structure that could be flexibly adapted to the respective conference needs.

As the budget was particularly tight, we decided to use a static page generator, which enabled us to create the pages quickly and cost-effectively. The conferences were spread over two periods - before and after the summer vacation - allowing us to gradually refine the design and functionality of the websites. While the first two conferences went online with a minimalist approach, we gave the main conference in the summer a visual polish, developed a cover image and also designed a poster to better promote the conference.

Focus on user-friendliness and efficiency

Our challenge was to take into account the different needs of the user groups: The organizers wanted to ensure that all relevant information was clearly presented and that participants could register easily. At the same time, it was important to present the speakers in the best possible way and to offer a detailed conference program with several parallel tracks that participants could put together individually.
Thanks to a clear structure and well thought-out scheduling, we were able to create a clear platform that allows users to find their way around and plan ahead. The website was also designed in such a way that it can be used as a modular system for future conferences.

Technical implementation and adjustments

Our team for this project consisted of two developers. The technical implementation was mainly in our hands, whereby we worked with a static page generator to meet the requirements of the conferences. The corporate design of the Humboldt University was used as a basis and further developed for web applications. We paid particular attention to creating a user-friendly structure that Humboldt University can also reuse for future conferences.

Agile working and close collaboration

The project duration was challenging, especially as the content had to be constantly updated by the lecturers. Despite the tight schedule, we managed to implement the requirements in a flexible and agile manner, sometimes even while on vacation. By regularly coordinating with the Humboldt University team - even during the summer months - we were able to ensure that the websites were completed on time and within budget.

Conclusion

The collaboration with Humboldt University was extremely satisfying and productive. The results are a great example for us of how we can create appealing and functional solutions for our customers even with limited resources. When everyone participates. 🎊
